Dear Traveler,

Part of the joy of Europe is its wonderful cocktail of past and present. You certainly get a rich dose of that when you ride the rails (in contrast to the generic "non-experience" of flying).

Recently I've enjoyed swooshing past the feet of fabled castles at 150 miles per hour. I've walked into the latticework splendor of an Orient Express–era station to be greeted by a smiling, multi-lingual hostess who's there to be sure I'll find my car and seat. And I've been buffeted by the salty wind through open windows as my train puddle-jumps from port to port along the Riviera, with compartment mates pointing out the beaches, yachts, and promenades as they fly by...
