Dear Traveler,
Lupa, the She Wolf district of Siena, had just won the Palio — Europe's wildest horse race. (The only rule: There are no rules.) The streets were a river of ecstatic Lupa locals, delirious with jubilation. I was two feet upstream from my cameraman — head down, arms out — protecting him from the human current so he could catch the scene without being jostled.
Trying to stand as strong as a rock in a river, and looking down at thousands of happy feet all stampeding toward the cathedral, I recalled the often coarse, always vibrant thunder of humanity we've captured to produce our new Season 9 of Rick Steves' Europe... Read more |
